Enhancements Versus Changes
All courses offered in the GMC Global Online Leadership College have been created according to the latest government and industry standards and under the supervision of an experienced instructional design team. The course layout, objectives, reading preparation, online learning resources, and activities adhere to pedagogical principles extended across the curriculum.
In order to maintain the instructional integrity of the courses offered in the GMC Global Online Leadership College, faculty may not change any of the curricula within a course.
Change is defined as deleting, modifying, or substituting course content such as discussion forum prompts, quiz/exam questions, reading assignments, videos, or anything that is a part of the overall course.
Faculty may, however, enhance a course by offering additional resources to assist students in completing the assignments and meeting the lesson objectives. When faculty enhance a course it is important to keep in mind that your enhancements must be ADA compliant. Review the ADA Compliance PDF to better understand what this means for you in the GMC Global Online College.
- Discussion Forum follow-up questions – although the initial question, or prompt, may not be changed, instructors are expected to set the pace and tone of each discussion forum by creating follow-up questions that promote critical thinking with thought-provoking questions. Post follow-up questions that introduce real-world applications of discussion topics. Encourage students to provide feedback to their peers and to assess their own discussion forum contributions. Ask engaging questions, pose challenging questions, and encourage students to conduct deeper thinking of a topic. Follow-up questions should generate and maintain student interest and motivation by creating a variety of opportunities for students to practice and improve their ability to consider different points of view, to express and defend positions, and to explore implications.
- Web Links – the Internet has an almost limitless supply of information that will be useful to the students. Faculty may provide the students with links to web sites that will help them be successful in the course. All web links used need to be ADA compliant. Speak with your Department Chair if you have questions about ADA compliance for web links.
- Videos – when selecting additional videos for student viewing, please carefully consider copyright and legal use restrictions before offering the videos to the students. All videos used need to be ADA compliant. Speak with your Department Chair if you have questions about ADA compliance for videos.
- Live Chat Sessions – each faculty member may use the live chat sessions (office hours) as he or she sees fit. Faculty may choose to pre-select topics for discussion, use the time for remediation, or socialize with the students. Live Chat is optional but suggested.
- Nongraded Assignments – practice quizzes, informational exercises, and informal question and answer sessions via the live chat feature are just a few ways that faculty can assess their students or provide them with ways to self-evaluate their progress.
If you find additional resources that you would like to add to the course to enhance the student learning experience you should speak with your Senior Department Chair on verifying ADA compliance for these additional resources before adding them to the course.
Permanent Course Modification Process:
Instructional design is an ongoing process. A course is never really complete. Each course will periodically go through a review and modification procedure to update the curriculum. Before permanent changes to a course can go into effect, the modified course must go through and pass the instructional design quality assurance certification process which includes ADA compliance.
